September Word Study

During the month of September we will review consonants, vowels, and their sounds.
In word study we will work on…

                the chicken letter (qu)
digraphs (wh, sh, ch, th, ck)
bonus letters that come at the end of words that end in f,l,s (sometimes  z)and have a preceding short vowel.
glued sounds such as: all, am, an
the suffix-s and its proper use i.e. dog......dogs.
Students are expected to mark tappable words in their writing and in their homework.  For example, the chicken letter should be circled, digraphs should be underlined, bonus letters should have a star above them, glued sounds should be boxed, and the suffix-s should be circled and the base word underlined......the base word is the word without the suffixes-s.

Here is an image of what "Marking Up" words look like:

September's trick words: has, they, one, said, from, have, put, or, were, her, there, by, what, she, been, who.
Remember - Trick words from September are tested all year long!  Once a trick word has been introduced, a student will be expected to know and spell that word for the entire school year (and the years that follow).  Trick words do not follow any rules (they're tricky!) and therefore the only way to learn them is through practice and memorization.

September's weekly words: fix, quit, rush, path, quick, luck, chill, fan, bell, mess, off, socks, jugs, ships.
